Book Review: The Hating Game by Sally Thorne

the hating game

I don’t read a lot of romance, but I am a lush for a hate to love romantic comedy. If that’s your style, you will love The Hating Game.

This book had me laughing out loud and swooning over Joshua Templeman. Although I can see why he may be problematic for some (he’s a huge douche for most of the book) he does redeem himself and we find out why he has such a “mean guy” facade. I also love, love, love Lucy. She is sweet, smart and slightly nerdy (hello Smurf collection). All of this and they both work at a publishing company? Sign me up.

Lucy and Josh are sworn enemies who share the same office. They play games such as “The Staring Game”, sling insults daily and call HR on each other regularly. Lucy is convinced that her and Josh will never be friends. Especially when a promotion comes up and they are up against each other.

I knew within the first ten pages that this was going to a publishing version of The Office and I was OBSESSED. Lucy and Josh are basically Jim and Pam, but more hate to love than insta love. The banter between them is AMAZING. I read this on my honeymoon and Mexico and it was perfect.

What I loved about this book is that it became so much more than just a comedy. Josh had some serious depth as a character and that’s something I appreciate in a rom-com. I love him so much that when I found out that Novelly Yours had a Joshua Templeman candle, I added it to my “needs immediately list”. SWOON.

I would recommend this to anyone who loves The Office and a good hate to love romance.
