Hey everyone! It’ s time to play everyone’s game, “What’s in My Cart?” It’s one of my favorites, except I never play correctly because I just ending up buying books that sit on my TBR forever haha.
I’m finding out that I have a lot of series to catch up on. The first being A Darker Shade of Magic by V.E. Schwab.
I’ve found lately that if I read a book synopsis and I don’t feel intrigued by it, I don’t bother picking it up. I feel slightly ashamed to say that happened with ADSOM. I know, I know. It’s a huge series in the YA fantasy world. But, I’m here to say I’m redeeming myself! It’s currently in my cart and I’m ready for it.
“Kell is one of the last Antari—magicians with a rare, coveted ability to travel between parallel Londons; Red, Grey, White, and, once upon a time, Black.
Kell was raised in Arnes—Red London—and officially serves the Maresh Empire as an ambassador, traveling between the frequent bloody regime changes in White London and the court of George III in the dullest of Londons, the one without any magic left to see.
Unofficially, Kell is a smuggler, servicing people willing to pay for even the smallest glimpses of a world they’ll never see. It’s a defiant hobby with dangerous consequences, which Kell is now seeing firsthand.
After an exchange goes awry, Kell escapes to Grey London and runs into Delilah Bard, a cut-purse with lofty aspirations. She first robs him, then saves him from a deadly enemy, and finally forces Kell to spirit her to another world for a proper adventure.
Now perilous magic is afoot, and treachery lurks at every turn. To save all of the worlds, they’ll first need to stay alive.”
Okay, it does sound a LITTLE more interesting to me now. 🙂
Second item in my cart, Nevernight by Jay Kristoff.
This is another book I have thought about reading and just never got around to. I read some reviews recently and decided that a “Hogwarts for Assassins” premise actually sounds pretty promising… The whole fotenotes thing? Not sure if I will love or hate that. We shall see!
“In a land where three suns almost never set, a fledgling killer joins a school of assassins, seeking vengeance against the powers who destroyed her family.
Daughter of an executed traitor, Mia Corvere is barely able to escape her father’s failed rebellion with her life. Alone and friendless, she hides in a city built from the bones of a dead god, hunted by the Senate and her father’s former comrades. But her gift for speaking with the shadows leads her to the door of a retired killer, and a future she never imagined.
Now, Mia is apprenticed to the deadliest flock of assassins in the entire Republic—the Red Church. If she bests her fellow students in contests of steel, poison and the subtle arts, she’ll be inducted among the Blades of the Lady of Blessed Murder, and one step closer to the vengeance she desires. But a killer is loose within the Church’s halls, the bloody secrets of Mia’s past return to haunt her, and a plot to bring down the entire congregation is unfolding in the shadows she so loves.
Will she even survive to initiation, let alone have her revenge?”
The third item in my cart is Spinning Silver by Naomi Novik.
Spinning Silver is a Rumpelstiltskin retelling, which makes me pretty intrigued. It isn’t my favorite fairy tale, but the reviews seem really promising! It also seems like a loose retelling, which I prefer. I love when the author weaves their own elements into a retelling.
That’s all for now! We shall see how long these stay in my cart!
