Book Review: Catwoman: Soul Stealer

There’s nothing quite like a signed copy of a book your favorite author wrote. When I found out LitJoy crate was doing signed copies of Catwoman: Soulstealer by Sarah J. Maas I jumped at the chance to snag a copy. I knew SJM wasn’t coming to my area anytime soon, so getting a book signed by her would be amazing.

I’d also like to start this book review by saying I know nothing about Catwoman. I thought she was part of Marvel until yesterday.. don’t hate me! I’ve just never gotten into the whole Marvel/DC thing. Forgive me!!!

Selina Kyle will do anything for her sister Maggie. Including joining a local fighting gang called the Leopards. With 27 confirmed wins, she’s unbeaten when it comes to the ring.

But when child protective services comes and takes Maggie away after a bad fight, Selina has to decide whether she wants to go to jail or join a league of assassins.

This book was full of fun. We see Selina turn into Catwoman, a role she seems to love and is damn good at. Catwoman proves that stealing isn’t just for the boys of Gotham. She teams up with Poison Ivy (who I love in this book) and Harley Quinn.

I thought Harley was a bit played down and wished she had been a bit MORE crazy. Poison Ivy seemed very shy and reserved (I’m not sure if she is in the comics?) and we don’t hear much at all about Batman. Again, I haven’t watched the movies or read the comics, so I’m not 100% sure how they are supposed to act. I did see Suicide Squad, so I know how crazy Harley should be.

I actually REALLY liked the character Luke Fox, or Batwing. He works as Batman’s assistant (?) and his character was very interesting. He suffers from PTSD in the book, and lives to serve the people of Gotham.

As Selina continues to steal and becomes closer to Luke, she has to figure out where her true interests lie.

I honestly liked this book more than I thought I would. The action was continuous, and I found myself being surprised at how everything turned out in the end. The banter was was good, and the romance between Luke and Selina was very SJM-esque. It was a solid 4 star read from me.
